The Liberation 80 Legacy Project encourages children to engage in history and share their family stories from World War II and the Occupation of Jersey.

Ethan's great-grandmother, Eileen Barette, was a teenager when the war began. Eilleen, who unfortunately passed away a few years ago, aged 92, had some incredible stories and memories of the Occupation. She would often go into local schools and talk to children about her experiences as a teenager during the war. Eileen also worked at the Maritime Museum and, until Covid struck in 2020, she would talk to visitors every Wednesday afternoon, giving them a first-hand account of the Occupation. The Liberation 80 Legacy Project encourages children to engage in history and share their family stories from World War II and the Occupation of Jersey.

Winnie and Barney are photographed with their Great-Grandfather, Lucien Coenen, and a framed account of his memories of Liberation Day.

Lucien, a French national, was captured by the Germans in Paris, France, in the early days of World War Two. Lucien was sent to Germany to work as forced labour, in the Agfa factory; he spent long days working and described memories of the conditions, as well as the distressing sights of the Jews in the streets of Germany, with their big, identifying Stars of David stitched on their clothing.

One day, Lucien didn’t get off the train at his usual stop to go to the factory, instead making his way to St Malo. From there, he boarded a ship to Jersey and upon arrival, he obtained a permit and was directed to work on the land.

Lucien spent the remainder of the Occupation working hard in Jersey and described life to us, for example, the rations, the lack of food (although he managed to purchase treats and goods for him and his friends on the “Black Market”) and the strict way of life.

For the 50th anniversary of the Liberation, Lucien gave a detailed recount of Liberation Day to Barney and Winnie’s mother, Ellie, which was displayed proudly in the town hall in Jersey, which coincided with Lucien (and others living in Jersey at the time of the Liberation, still present in 1995) being presented with a medal to commemorate the occasion.

Year 6 have had a busy week so far as part of their work on World War II. Earlier in the week, they visited the Jersey War Tunnels to learn more about the occupation.
They also had a special visit at school from Lord Hives, who gave a lovely presentation on the work of his grandfather, Ernest 1st Baron Hives.

Ernest Hives, 1st Baron Hives, was chairman of Rolls Royce and, not only did he help design the Merlin engine, which was used to power the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster planes that were instrumental in the allied victory against the Nazis, he also ensured that Britain was prepared for war, despite opposition, by increasing production from 1937 onwards.

George is photographed with his great-grandfather's demob coat. George's great-grandparents, Mr Augustus William Purden and Mrs Cecile Simonne Purden (nee Gorvel), both served during the war.

Cecile grew up at Meadow Farm in Trinity and, like many families, the Gorvels were due to leave Jersey on the evacuation boats in 1940. Her family went to the harbour but decided to stay and protect their home, despite the hardships that they may face. They went back to their farm where they resided for the duration of the occupation.

When the island was liberated in May 1945, Cecile joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), she was deployed to Germany, where she served alongside troops still serving. Whilst in Germany, she met Augustus Purden who was deployed to Europe D- Day + 1. Gus was a member of the Royal Corp of Signals; he was a dispatch rider and was injured in the line of duty.

After demobilisation, Gus travelled straight to Jersey only to discover that Cecile had not yet returned. He was put straight to work on the family farm by her parents and waited for Cecile's return. Cecile and Gus were married a year later in St Thomas’ Catholic Church, and lived a long and happy life together until 2006, when Cecile passed. Gus passed in 2009.

Our Shell boys were selected to take part in the Young Enterprise Jersey Final - one of only three teams selected from 30 teams. Last week the boys presented their concept for Team Timber - their eco-friendly timber business. The boys were unsuccessful at claiming the top prize but Xavier was awarded the 'Judges Choice' Award for his enthusiasm in presenting and Mark, the Best Student Journey Award for his role as Finance Director. We are so very proud of our boys for getting to the Jersey Final and would like to congratulate them all on their success!

We had a fantastic afternoon of cricket at St Michael's and College Field earlier this week. St Michael's 1st XI kicked off the season with a win over Victoria College Year 8s, while the 2nd XI put up a great fight against a strong Victoria Year 7 side. Lots of sunshine, skill, and standout performances across all four teams - what a brilliant way to start the cricket season!
