Shell (Years 9)
Shell is unique to St Michael’s.
We recognise the need to accommodate children who have a desire to stay in Jersey for secondary school education and continue in a coeducational environment.
Shell is designed as a bridging year between Year 8 at St Michael’s and Year 10 entry into Hautlieu. Although this isn’t an exclusive route, over the years children have enjoyed staying in the all familiar St Michael’s environment before heading off to other Jersey schools and UK boarding schools for Year 10 entry.
The Shell Year naturally plays out against a backdrop of the prep school environment with the advantages including class size and extramural provisions such a setting would enjoy.
Our bespoke curriculum aligns with Hautlieu’s Year 10 entry requirements and matches the GCSE programmes at on-island secondary schools. Essentially, Shell serves as a pre-GCSE year by design, providing a challenging and consistent academic experience.
Our Shell Enrichment Programme goes beyond the traditional curriculum, helping children enhance their interpersonal skills and build confidence. Through the St Michael’s ESG programme, students lead initiatives like fundraising and community volunteering, while developing strong public speaking skills. These experiences are integral to earning their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, culminating in an expedition at the end of the year.
