Prep
Early experiences shape our entire lives. At St Michael's, our mission is to nurture pupils into curious, creative learners and independent thinkers, ready to seize every opportunity.
Pupils display strong levels of self-confidence, self-understanding and self-awareness which allow them to develop their own learning to the next stage.
Juniors
(Years 3 and 4)
Within the Juniors, the majority of subjects are taught by childrens’ Form Teachers with the exceptions of Music, Drama, Engineering, Art, Reasoning, French and Sport.
Pupils thrive under the guidance of dedicated and experienced Form Teachers, supported by Teaching Assistants during core subjects. Lessons are enriched through the use of diverse learning styles, while a Learning Support teacher provides 1:1 and group sessions tailored to all abilities. Small class sizes enable staff to develop a deep understanding of each pupil, fostering excellent pastoral care. This nurturing environment allows pupils to flourish, confidently take risks, and grow in a supportive setting.
In the Juniors, we support children in preparing for senior school entry tests, including the ISEB Pre-Test, with our timetabled Reasoning lessons as well as targeted activities.
Seniors
The final years at St Michael’s enables children to remain children but develop into responsible, fully independent learners and empathetic young people.
Our small class sizes, specialist teachers and commitment to breadth are defining features of this part of the school.
Senior pupils move around the School for their different subjects, which prepares them well for navigating their way through larger school sites at senior school. We delight in giving children the chance to simply enjoy being children, and they benefit from the best of both worlds: being taught by specialists in their subjects, and remaining in a safe and secure environment they know and love.
The final years at St Michael’s allow children to remain children while growing into responsible, independent learners and empathetic young individuals. During this time, they experience some of the most significant changes in their lives, form lasting friendships, and solidify their learning habits. Being at the top of a Prep School is very rewarding and children have a real sense of belonging. These two extra years offer pupils early leadership opportunities, allowing them to take pride in their accomplishments—whether it’s playing for the top sports teams, leading assemblies, taking centre stage in drama productions, touring, or being role models for younger children. It’s a time for them to shine and take on new responsibilities that help shape their confidence and character.
Pupils make strong progress and achieve well because they are valued as individuals, receive bespoke support and guidance, and sufficient challenge in most lessons.
